Electricity First Work Program, Career Focus Initiative

Information and Guide

The objectives of the Electricity First Work Program, Career Focus Initiative are to:

  • Increase the supply of highly qualified people by
    hiring unemployed and/or underemployed youth;
  • To promote the benefits of advanced studies;
  • To demonstrate federal leadership by investing in the skills required to meet the needs of the knowledge economy; and
  • Facilitate the transition of highly skilled young people to a rapidly changing labour market.

Under this initiative, the Electricity Sector Council (ESC) will provide eligible companies with a subsidy equal to 1/3 the eligible participant's salary up to a maximum of $10,000 over a maximum 12 month work experience period.

How Companies Can Apply:

1. Interview and select a candidate

2. Host companies/employers must:

  • Be a business related to the energy sector
  • Guarantee a minimum of 30 hours of work per week in a full-time position for a minimum of 4 months
  • Provide $2 in wages for every $1 of wage subsidy received (a maximum of $10,000.00 per candidate available)
  • Must have completed the wage subsidy application and have the employer wage subsidy contract in place before the candidate starts work
  • Must have nepotism policy in place in regards to the participant
  • Develop a formal learning plan (personalized action plan, between an employer and a participant, designed to help set and meet work-related learning objectives)

3. Ensure that your prospective participant meets the following criteria:

  • Have graduated as a technician, technologist or engineer with a degree or diploma from University, college, post-secondary institutes and CEGEPS
  • Be between the ages of 15 and 30
  • Be a new hire (not an existing employee)
  • Be a Canadian citizen or have landed immigrant status
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be unemployed and/or underemployed

4. To apply, please submit the following six documents:

1. Participant Application Form
2. Employer Eligibility Assessment
3. ESC's Employer Information and Checklist
4. Learning Plan signed by both parties

5. Job description of position being filled
6. A copy of the participant's résumé and their degree / diploma
