Knowledge Management and Transfer

With the anticipated retirement of almost 29% of electricity employees between 2007 and 2012, there is an urgent need to ensure that industry stakeholders have in place a formal knowledge management system to ensure the timely transfer of knowledge to both new and existing employees. Technological innovation and environmental considerations suggest that the skill sets required for the next generation of workers may be substantially different from today, which will also impact on organizational training strategies. Knowledge Management and Transfer project will be crucial to ensure that an organization's intellectual capital (such as the expertise and know-how possessed by key individuals) is not lost as individuals retire and new workers are hired.

The overarching objective of this project is to undertake a comprehensive body of research to identify knowledge management and transfer best practices within the electricity industry in Canada. Furthermore, it will provide a number of strategic recommendations that will aid industry members in ensuring effective knowledge transfer planning processes are adopted within their organizations, particularly for their critical, scarce and ‘long lead-time hire’ positions.
