National Occupational Standards

National Occupational Standards (NOS) are an inventory of the skills, competencies and knowledge that is required to adequately perform a specific job.

In the electricity sector, occupation descriptions and classifications are not standardized. As a result, there is much confusion about the occupational diversity and training requirements of each segment of the sector, making it difficult for firms to recruit effectively from other organizations, sectors and regions. To address this problem, the Electricity Sector Council has developed the following national occupational standards and essential skill profiles for benchmark occupations related to electricity generation, transmission and distributions, as well as renewable energy.
