What is the Labour Market Information (LMI) website?
The LMI website is a key component of the Electricity Sector Council's Labour Market Information Program. The website provides comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date labour market information about Canada's electricity industry. The site's database system draws on the results of a national survey of industry stakeholders to deliver the relevant and topical labour market information. The site also houses a number of research reports, effectively providing a one-stop portal for LMI about Canada's electricity industry.
What specific information will I find on the website?
The LMI website provides comprehensive supply and demand data, access to 2008 and 2004 sector studies, customized graphs, and links to relevant data sources.
What is the LMI program?
The LMI program is a system of current and future labour supply and demand information. Accurate and up-to-date, the information is available to industry stakeholders through an online LMI resource centre. The LMI program's objective is to help industry professionals effectively plan human resource strategies. Using information from the current project, the ESC, employers and businesses in the electricity sector can mitigate the effects of the human resource shortages.
Where does the LMI program get its data?
Data used in the 2008 ESC's LMI Program were based on extensive research and consultation activities. These activities included:
What challenges does the LMI program and LMI website address?
Impending labour shortages pose a serious risk to Canada's electricity sector. In response to this risk, the ESC - in partnership with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) - commissioned a study of areas and occupations most likely to suffer labour shortages. In broader terms, the study sought to determine the overall extent of the labour supply/demand challenge in the electricity industry. The study focuses on the number of workers that will be required in 15 key critical occupations over the next five years, and where those workers can be found. It also explores factors now impacting the sector, such as technological changes, aging infrastructure and an increasing demand for energy.
